INS Sarvekshak’s visit highlights strong maritime partnership between India and Mauritius
In order to launch a joint hydrographic survey and strengthen maritime cooperation with Mauritius, INS Sarvekshak arrived at Port Louis on December 26.
The engagement marks a significant step in bolstering maritime partnership between India and Mauritius.
It also reflects shared commitment to regional development and deeper bilateral cooperation in line with India’s SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region) vision.
Fostering maritime cooperation
INS Sarvekshak’s mission involves more than just survey operations. It will engage in technical knowledge exchanges, professional interactions, and training sessions on hydrography with Mauritian authorities.
These activities aim to empower Mauritius with the tools necessary for sustainable maritime infrastructure development, resource management, and coastal planning.
The Indian High Commission to Mauritius highlighted the warm reception on social media, stating, “The ship will undertake joint hydrographic survey and carry out professional interactions with Mauritius’ National Coastguard to enhance interoperability and mutual cooperation between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius National Coastguard.”
The visit of INS Sarvekshak takes place at the time when India and Mauritius have witnessed deepening of partnership between them.
Earlier this month, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri concluded a three-day visit to Mauritius, during which he reassured Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam of India’s steadfast commitment to the island nation’s development and prosperity.
Misri’s visit also included inspections of ongoing India-supported projects, such as a new college and a health center in Cap Malheureux.
Importance of hydrographic survey
The ongoing hydrographic survey will play a pivotal role in enhancing Mauritius’ maritime capabilities. By mapping coastal and underwater terrains, the survey is expected to aid the strategic development of ports, the sustainable utilization of marine resources, and the implementation of effective coastal management practices.
Hydrographic data collected during this survey will also assist in navigation safety, ensuring the protection of both commercial and recreational vessels operating in Mauritius' waters.
India’s efforts in the Indian Ocean region extend beyond technical assistance. They also include strategic initiatives to enhance maritime security, promote regional stability, and foster economic growth.
The hydrographic survey by INS Sarvekshak is expected to yield long-term benefits for Mauritius. Accurate mapping of its maritime territories will provide critical insights for future developmental initiatives, enhancing its capacity to harness marine resources effectively.
As the Indian Navy continues to expand its outreach in the Indian Ocean, missions like these serve as a cornerstone for regional collaboration.
With both nations committed to deepening their ties, the arrival of INS Sarvekshak at Port Louis marks yet another milestone in the enduring friendship between India and Mauritius. This collaborative effort sets the stage for further advancements in maritime security, regional development, and mutual prosperity, reinforcing the shared values that unite these two nations.
India-Mauritius enduring partnership
The enduring partnership between India and Mauritius is anchored in shared history and culture. Approximately 70% of Mauritius’ population is of Indian origin, and initiatives such as visa-free travel for Indian tourists and special OCI (Overseas Citizenship of India) privileges for Mauritians of Indian descent have further cemented these ties.
Beyond maritime cooperation, India and Mauritius maintain robust economic and educational exchanges. Around 80,000 Indian tourists visit Mauritius annually, and over 2,300 Indian students are pursuing higher education in fields such as medicine and business in Mauritius.
Mauritius has also been a significant partner in India’s development outreach. From building infrastructure to advancing healthcare and education, India’s assistance has been instrumental in fostering inclusive growth and progress in Mauritius. The hydrographic survey mission adds another dimension to this multifaceted partnership.
